Thanks so much for your reply ... love to hear from fellow members of the "not-very-religious people who can never stop thinking abt faith and religion" club! Faith can actually be hard for me to think about as like a *thing that people personally do* ... it's often easier to wrap my brain around it as a sort of abstract political/historical force, so it's startling to remember that it's addressing MY fears. Or that, re: the fear and trembling, being religious doesn't somehow absolve people of these fears I guess? It's just so interesting that while we all solve it differently/find a habitable place to draw our line, the struggle to locate "the thin line between relief in the acceptance of futility and the desperate hope that our suffering isn't insignificant" (love this phrasing so much btw), is omnipresent ... endless food for thought as you said!
